Hyper Pixel Man

Play 36 levels while jumping from platform to platform and dodging spikes, saws, bullets, and explosions. There are two ways to play, with unlimited lives or with a limited number of lives, I recommend unlimited but some people play with limited lives anyways.

Ludum Dare 26

I made an entry for Ludum Dare 26.  It was nice to participate because I missed the last one so I haven’t made a 48 hour game in a while.  The theme this time was minimalism, so I made a game with minimalistic gameplay, you only need to press one button.  The game is a horizontal shooter, but since there is only one button you have to try hard just to stay in the air, and you also have to deal with enemies. Demon Decimator is now out!

Demon Decimator is now out on Newgrounds.  It is a puzzle game where you have to slide the demons into the lava to destroy them.  There are many mechanics in the game to help you.  This is my first puzzle game, I hope you enjoy it!  It you want to read more about it please read my previous posts.

Demon Decimator: Sneak Peak

Remember that puzzle game I was talking about?  While it has a name now, it is called Demon Decimator.  It is coming along well, and will be out soon.  I hope.  What is going on is there are demons trapped in glass cubed and you have to burn them before they escape.  You slide them around and use the other mechanisms to help you drop them into pits of lava.  Here is a video of it in action.

If you’ve read the previous post about it, then you probably notice a few differences.  The HUD at the side looks a lot nice, and has a bunch more stuff in it, like buttons to pause and mute the game, and your nice friend death motivating you with nice quotes.  Other then that the changes are mainly new levels and mechanics.  Still having lots of fun working on this.

Making a Puzzle Game: Level Design

I’m making a new game, and it will be a puzzle game.  No action, no shooting, just a strict puzzler.  While this might seem like it’s not a big deal, it is for me because this is actually my first time trying to make a puzzle game, before I’ve mainly made shooters and platformers.  Before I start talking, here is a screen shot (click for better quality), I’ll talk more about the actual game later, I’m going to talk about level design for now.

Designing a level in a puzzle game is somewhat different to what I’m used to.  You have to try and make the player use their brain power to solve whatever you put in from of them,  instead of making them use timing or skill like I usually do.   Personally I find it a lot hared then making the normal games I make, but it is nice to try something new, which is why I’m doing this.

My method for actually making the level is this:  I think of one main idea and make it into a puzzle, or make small sections of the puzzle at a time, and add them all together in the end.   For example in the screenshot of the game I’m working on now above this, you have to get the characters to fall in the lava.  They both start at the top, and the only place that they can get to the magma from is the bottom centre.  It is easy to get one character in the right place, but the hard part is getting the second one in.  You need to get one in and then help the second character in with the first.  This is the main idea I had while making this level, and I just kept trying until I got something that I felt fit my idea.

I hope someone under stood that and I’m not just rambling, and that anyone who read this isn’t bored to death.  Sorry if you just want to hear about the games, not just how I make them, but next time it will be about the game, I promise!  Trailer and more about this game will come in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.

Ludum Dare 24

I made an entry for Ludum Dare, which is a 48 hour game making competition.  The theme this time was evolution, so I made a game based around the your character evolving and getting new abilities as the game progresses.  My entry is called Slimevolution, and you can play it here.   Play as a slime that evolves the more it eats, and use you evolution to defeat your enemies. Gain friends, defeat bats and alligators.  You can also eat alligator ham!

This isn’t my first Ludum Dare, but it is my first one using Flash.  Flash took a bit longer, but I think that is only because I’m not as experienced with it.  Had lots of fun, and will be doing it again.  I really hope that everyone enjoys it, and I’t would be awesome if I won!

Fluunix is Out Now!

Fluunix Trailer

Made a gameplay trailer for Fluunix.  Went with the same style trailer that I used for the Pixel Man games.  It shows off a lot of gameplay, including the new “survival” levels, where you have to survive continuous attacks from enemies for a set amount of time.

The game is coming together well, and I’m basically done most of the art and coding, now I have to make music and polish it with menu’s.  Might also make a final boss fight at the end of the game, but I’m still thinking of ideas for that.  The game will be out in a few weeks I think.

Fluunix Development: Random Enemies

This is just a random video of me testing a potential enemy for my upcoming game Fluunix.  All the enemies are little devil like creatures and the one in this video is really weird.   I wonder if it has ever been done before.  It fires a bullet at you, but you have to worry even if you are far away.  No matter how far away you are, it fires the bullet so it will hit you in half a second.  This is why in the video, some bullets are barely moving, and some rush off the screen.  I like it, and might keep it, but will probably lower the time it takes the bullet to reach you.

This wasn’t even on purpose, I was just trying to get the bullet to fire at the player, and it just happened.  I might also use this code for a homing land mine, one that speeds up when it is close to you and slows down when it is far away.  What do you think of this.

Super Pixel Man+ Update

I updated Super Pixel Man+ to make it less unfair.  To get it you just need to download the game again.  This update includes:

  • Bigger sight radius so you are less blind
  • Save states, “K” to save and “L” to load

There were also a few updates that I didn’t mention in the past, before the date of this post and they were:

  • Red spikes so you know the they are not stairs
  • Less health for the first boss
  • Easier to jump down stairs
  • Bug fixed
